How to help a new mum

Don't make assumptions, make some tea .

Leave your opinions and understanding of what makes a good mum and a good baby at the door.

Listen, without waiting to speak.

Listen, without planning how to fix it.

Listen, and if you must speak, use it to check you understood properly.

Don't leave without doing something useful; at the very least make your own tea and wash up your cup.

Do do not have a right to hold the baby. I don't care who you are.

If there is washing in the machine, hang it up while you chat. If there is nothing in the cupboards, ask if she needs anything.

Walk the dog, stroke the cat.

Does she want to have a shower? Does she want to have a sleep?

If you truly want to help, you can do so much with so little.
